Mmm Spun Sugar Champagne
Take them out of the Ecoenclose envelope (love them by the way). Admire the packaging.
Great packaging!
Read Amy's sweet note (and remember why you love ordering from Work At Home Moms [WAHMs] and homemade crafters).
Amy's cute note
Remove gorgeous dryer balls from package and place them in the dryer.

Lisa's dirty duds.
Wait for someone to dirty some laundry (HA! Wait, I'm a mom...no waiting...). Be excited to see how much quicker your clothes dry and how awesome they smell.

Dry clothes.
How cool is the inside of Lisa's dryer?!
Listen to the "thump thump thump thump" of the dryer balls rolling around in there separating the laundry. Smile when you realize what usually takes 80 minutes to dry took 60 minutes.
Lisa's dryer has a light. Totally jealous.
20 minutes off a large load is great (says Tony the Tiger), especially over time!

Order more dryer balls or a scent refresher kit from Amy by using the %15 off code she gave us just for our readers. Didn't get that code in your email? Huh. Are you signed up for our email list? If not, do so here. Subscribers will receive an email with a promo code for 15% off on Monday, September 30 so be sure to register by then!

Enjoy awesome smelling laundry, save electricity, and don't have to use dryer sheets. Love it!

For Those About to Write...We Salute You! Blogger Idol 2013

If you read a lot of blogs like we do, you'll know that there are some amazing folks out there. Great storytellers. Funny. Amazing writers. Some of them are all of those and then some. Blogger Idol is an annual contest to find THE most amazing writers who appeal to a wide audience (especially the judges). The contest allows them to show their stuff, meet new people, and maybe find some new readers who wouldn't otherwise stumble upon their URL. You can also win some cool prizes. But nobody plays just for prizes (right?!).

And we're throwing our three amazingly stylish hats in the ring.

Liz (finds her hat under the desk): Damn it, mine's made of paper and covered in purple marker scribbles. I swear Silas writes on everything. I'll never have anything nice until that kid's 18 and at art school.

Robyn (perfectly coiffed): Mine's pink and sparkly camo with a Harley logo on it.

Lisa (takes her hat off): Seriously. There's wolf hair. All. Over. Mine.

Why would we do this? Because it looks like fun. Because we'd love the challenge of weekly prompts and the excitement of possibly making it at least two weeks before we get eliminated (because we know we're not going to win). But who cares. Not us.

So this is our audition post. *Ta dah!* Who are we? We're three moms from different parts of the US. Liz started this blog in 2011 as an outlet for writing about her experiences with her first son. It waxed, it waned, until finally something clicked and she decided to play "go big or go home." In August of 2013 Liz invited two friends, Robyn and Lisa, to write with her, expanding the scope of the blog and adding in some fresh voices (Robyn's the fresh one, Liz and Lisa are pretty tame in comparison). The focus of our blog is, obviously, on parenting, but we tend to stray into different areas, flexing our writing muscles and our brains (which can get taken over by children). We write a weekly "What We've Learned" post which shows parenting experiences from different perspectives. We write about parenting stories in the news, cloth diapering (since we all cloth diaper our Littles), cooking, and introspecting, all things that parents these days may spend some time doing.

We hope that you have enjoyed what you've read and that you get a chance to click around the blog at different recent posts. We love seeing new faces around our Facebook community, so be sure to stop by!

Want to learn more about Blogger Idol or follow the contest on Facebook? Do. It.

Top 25 Southern Mom Blog?

Recently we told you we were nominated for the Top 25 Southern Mom Blog. Voting ends today at 5 pm PST. We need your help (and the help of anyone around you who will vote). We've been holding our own around the 8 or 9 spot for a while, but now we're down to 12.

Voting is quick. There's no sign up. You literally go to the Circle of Moms page, scroll down to our blog (ahem, Mama Around the House if you forget), and click the vote button (it looks like a heart). You can x out of the two pop ups that ask you to sign up for Circle of Moms. And bam, you're done.

Why do we want to win? Mostly just for the fun of it. And we'd get a cool badge for our blog saying we were in the Top 25. Woo hoo!

So what do you get? Once you've voted, come back to this page (or hey, open Circle of Moms in a new tab) and comment that you voted. Be sure to leave your email address in the comment. One random lucky voter will win their choice of a $10 gift card. Amazon? iTunes? What's your poison?

Music Party (with Prizes)!

This evening (9 E/8 C) we’ll be playing a quick game where you could be entered to win one of two $10 iTunes gift cards. All you have to do is suggest songs for an exercise/running playlist on the thread on our Facebook page. Once we “close” the game at 10 p.m. Eastern, 9 p.m. Central, we’ll randomly choose two participants to win (using Random.org). By providing us with a song you are indicating that you would like to be entered into the drawing. Winners will be contacted and need to provide their email address for the gift card to be sent.

First, make sure that you like our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/mamaaroundthehouse

Then at 9 p.m. Eastern/8 p.m. Central, come hang out on the page. We’ll announce the start of the game and ask you to post at least one song (title and artist) for a running/exercise playlist. These songs will be published as a list on a future blog post as well (and we’ll probably use them as we train for our 5K in September).

Want extra entries? Tweet about the game (tagging @MamaArndThHouse) and provide the link to our blog post about the game. Tweets must be sent prior to 9:30 p.m. Eastern/8:30 p.m. Central to count.

A possible Tweet looks like this:

Natural Skincare? You Betcha! *And A Giveaway*

I’m a skincare product aficionado, I admit it. I’ve gone through who knows how many products that guarantee this or that, and most of them don’t really do the job the say they will (or I get frustrated and move on). At the age of 35, I’ve found that I’m more into ease of use and the natural qualities of my products than anything else. I’ve also found that I see things on my skin (lines mostly) that just make me cringe when I see myself smile in pictures or in the mirror.

It is possible to make your own skincare “stuff.” Goodmorning America talked to Dr. Jennifer Ashton and she gave some fantastic suggestions – using coconut oil for the face, safflower oil for the body, olive oil for the hair, and sugar scrubs to exfoliate (combining sugar, milk, and honey). She also suggests mixing sugar, honey, milk, and oatmeal for a weekly fifteen-minute facial mask. Some of us don’t have the time to put this stuff together (or we’re lazy which I’ll admit to), so we want to buy the products ready made for us. Here I can give you two suggestions for amazing companies with amazing products.

Lush

Every few years I find myself refocusing on my skin (and sometimes makeup) and buying more products (that get used then put in the box under the bathroom sink…a box which is pretty dang big and overflowing). I feel as if I can’t throw anything that’s not empty away! These past few months I’ve been using a lot of products from Lush, a handmade skin care company out of Canada that uses organic fruits and vegetables, essential oils, and safe synthetics in their products. I love that many of their products are vegan and that they use minimal packaging (that is recyclable).

So what are some of my favorite Lush products? I’ve been using their Aromaco deodorant bar and Coconut powder for anti-perspiring/scent. I love the Snow Fairy shower gel (it smells like cotton candy and has sparkles in it, how fun) and The Godmother soap (same scent as Snow Fairy) – they make my whole bathroom smell fabulous. I’ve also been using Lemony Flutter (designed as a cuticle cream but good for hands and elbows that are dry) with mixed results. I probably won’t buy that one again although Mike likes using it on his hands after he’s been working in the ceramics lab all day. Hair? I’ve been using Godiva Shampoo Bar (never tried solid shampoo? It’s pretty cool, I have to admit) which has a lot of cocoa and shea butter to mosturize. Mike uses the Cynthia Sylvia Stout, which helps with dry scalp but does NOT make hair poofy (which is one of his mail beefs with most shampoos for dry scalp). He’s still using it, so that right there says something! I also use R&B, which is a leave in conditioner – it helps with poofy curly hair especially in our high humidity area.

What about for my face? Well, I start off after washing my face with Tea Tree Water, and then I use Enchanted Eye Cream around my eyes and Lovely Jubblies (usually for use with skin on the chest) all around my face/chin/neck. After just a month of using these three I can tell you that my skin looks awesome – even (healthy) tone, no issues with oil or dry patches, and the little bumps under my chin (which I assume were due to soap residue) are gone. I also have some Pow Wow which is a lip scrub that can be useful especially in the morning to get the ugh off your lips which builds up overnight. It’s supposedly infused with caffeine too which could be helpful. I’ve used it a bunch of times and honestly don’t see a huge difference (although it tastes good).

My final and full favorite? Toothy Tabs. Yessir, solid toothpaste. Think that’s weird? We did too. So you get this small cardboard box that looks like a mint box, and inside are a bunch of, well, mint-looking things. Don’t suck on them, they’re not mints. You chew them up with your front teeth and then use them to brush your teeth. They lather just as well as your tube toothpaste and create a heck of a lot less waste. Mike isn’t a huge fan because there’s no fluoride in them. Check out your local Lush store/counter for lots of different flavors!

Delish Naturals

Also from Canada (hm…I see a natural skincare pattern) comes Delish Naturals created and produced by Krystal Clark. I actually received some Delish-ious Baby and Body Lotion as a Christmas gift, and loved it, so I started looking into her other products. The fabulous things about the Lotion are that a) it’s not greasy (I hate greasy lotion, that’s my #1 reason to stop using anything), and b) it’s a good “smell level” – some stuff is so overpowering that you’re thinking, who could wear this and not get a migraine?! But my Black Raspberry Vanilla is just a hint and I love it. Also fabulous? I can use it on Silas if I so choose (which I have with our dry weather) and not worry because it’s all natural.

Delish caries a lot of skin stuff for both mama and baby. Krystal created these products after her daughter was born and experienced skin troubles like eczema. She wanted to use natural ingredients and cloth diaper friendly materials to help her daughter, so she experimented and studied and came up with Yum Yum Butter (their most popular product). So CD-friendly diaper cream? Check. Bump butter for prego mamas? Check. Natural bug sprays and balms? Check. Sugar scrubs, shampoos, oh my! My current favorites are the Glam Glow Brown Sugar Scrub, the Baby and Body Lotion, and Pucker (lip happiness!). You can order from Delish’s Hyenacart or you can check out her retailers (both Canada and US) and of course browse the retailers’ other wares. Oh my PayPal account hurts…

Where do you find the best natural skincare products or suggestions?

Want to win a tub of Yum Yum Butter (which is good for diaper rash and other skin issues for the entire family)? Complete the following:

1. Make sure you’ve “liked” us on Facebook.
2. Like Delish Naturals on Facebook.
3. Fill out the entry form (which requires you to go to Delish's Hyenacart store and pick a favorite Yum Yum Butter scent).
4. A winner will be chosen randomly on January 15th at 11:59 p.m., so that gives you just over two weeks to enter. The winner will be emailed for their shipping information once the giveaway ends.
5. Smell fabulous and natural!

Thanks for all your support you guys.
Love,
Liz

Not Your Average Paper Towel – Review and Giveaway

I sent Mike grocery shopping today and stayed home to clean the house. He was amazed when he got there (he texted me, “Is it a holiday? Why are all these people here?”). One of the things I had on our list was a roll of paper towels. Mike brought home an 8-pack of paper towels, and I laughed. “Well I guess that’ll last us for the next five months.” “Not the way you go through paper towels,” he replied. I raised an eyebrow and pointed to the paper towel roll currently on the spindle. “THAT has been there for the past week.” And it was only ¼ of the way gone.

I used to be a paper towel waster. Super bad. Like a full sheet just to wipe up a little water. I got better by ripping off a small amount to blow my nose on or something like that, but I still didn’t like the fact that I was using paper. Enter Cassie Louis and her fabulous Unpaper Towels. Cassie (of Crafted By Cassie) makes her towels out of birdseye cotton serged around the edges. She makes some with snaps (so you can make a “roll” of them just like paper towels) or without.

Cassie sent me 10 unpaper towels with rainbow serging (stitching around the edge) with snaps.

I snapped them up and rolled them around the regular roll of paper towels. Mike took one and put it in his pocket and it became his “hanky” for the week (I made him wash that one). I brought one in my purse for lunch finger wiping rather than grabbing a napkin, and I used them at dinner rather than paper towels (I always have a napkin or paper towel to wipe my fingers and face). I used them in the kitchen for wiping up spills and sometimes a little boy’s fingers. When we were done with them they went in the “kitchen wash bag” (along with our United By Fluff wipes for kiddo cleanup and our hand towels) and easily washed along with all that stuff.

So using cloth towels has decreased our paper towels usage by a huge percentage. It was amazing to watch the paper towel rolls not disappear. I really can’t remember the last time I recycled a paper towel roll. We’ve stopped snapping them together and rolling them up because it got kind of frustrating if you needed one quickly, but I think the idea is good in general. But obviously if you have snaps on your towels you don’t need to use them. Our cloth towels go in a pile on top of the paper towel holder.

Wait, did I say “if YOU have snaps on YOUR towels…?” I did. You know why? Because I want you to have 10 of Crafted By Cassie’s unpaper towels. If you enter this month’s contest, you could win 10 of the towels just like the ones pictured here. They are sewn and ready to come live with you!

To enter, “like” both the Mama Around the House Facebook page and the Crafted by Cassie Facebook page. On Cassie’s FB pictures, choose which project that she has done that you think is the coolest, and fill out the entry form. Good luck and thanks for reading!

Cloth Wipes – Not Just Awesome for Diapering (“United By Fluff” Review and Giveaway)

A few weeks ago I got a package with a Gen-Y diaper cover that I had traded for and it came with a little something special – a square cloth wipe from United by Fluff (crafted by the amazing Jessie McLouth). While we cloth diaper, we don’t typically use cloth wipes but I had been thinking about getting some wipes for general Silas clean up (think after spaghetti).

When I opened it I honestly didn’t want to wash it and use it on him – I wanted to rub it on my own face. One side was cotton flannel print, and the other side was super soft minky-type fabric. It was sewn extremely well (and machine stitched, work-at-home-Momma-made), and simply fabulous. It made me WANT to use cloth wipes on Silas’ tush. So just to try it, I did and it worked well - just as well as those disposable wipes. AND you don’t trash them after you use them; you simply wash them with your cloth diapers (or by themselves if you don’t cloth diaper). Some of her wipes come with the minky dot fabric as well, which I have found is super useful for getting in nooks and crannies of fingers and toes and other areas as well.

So you don’t cloth diaper? What can you use these luscious things for? Child clean up. Drool catching. Hand washing. Counter clean up. Spilt anything. Baby washing. Feet washing (I don’t know how many times we’ve done this so far with my stinky-footed lad). Wiping off the dog after ravioli night (no I’m not joking). Pretty much anything cleaning or child/cleaning related, you can use these for.

I am so in love with these wipes that I want someone else to have some too! Since the Facebook “likes” is close to 100, I’m going to give one lucky “liker” 10 of these fantastic things in their choice of print. How do you enter? Well, let me tell you…

1. Make sure you’ve “liked” us on Facebook.
2. Like United by Fluff on Facebook.
3. Fill out the entry form (which requires you to go to United by Fluff’s Hyenacart store and pick a favorite print).
4. A winner will be chosen randomly on August 15th at 11:59 p.m., so that gives you just over a week to enter. The winner will be emailed for their shipping information once the giveaway ends.
5. Wipe and clean eco-friendly!

Thanks for all your support you guys.
Love,
Liz

**FYI: The products endorsed and offered here were chosen by me and I was in no way compensated for suggesting them to you. I just really enjoy them and hope you do too!**

We’re Getting There…Where Are We Going?

Slowly but surely I’ve been moving the blog into the realm of social media. First a Twitter account, and now a Facebook fan page. All this social networking has made me contemplate where exactly all of this is going, and I think I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m going to maintain the “mission statement” of the blog as I wrote originally. Parenting. Environmentalism. Balancing life and work. These are still our main topics. And we’ll keep on keeping-on.

What’s next? I figure a giveaway is in order since I personally love blog giveaways (especially winning them). Here’s the plan – once we hit 50 fans on the Facebook page, we’ll do an eco-home giveaway. The first one? Reusable shopping bags. Because everyone can use those!

So if you’re a fan via Google Friend Connect (GFC), make sure to become a Facebook fan as well in order to help us get to our first goal (and to be able to enter into the contest!).

Feed Your Stash Friday?!

Diaper Junction does a giveaway each week starting on Friday where you can win diapers to feed your cloth diapering stash. It's called Feed Your Stash Friday (or FYSF). This week they're giving away a Flip system (2 covers and 6 inserts). Rules for entering are here. I don't know about you, but I'd love to win some free fluff and try a new diaper out. Plus the Flip covers can be used as covers over other things (such as flats which I'm trying out soon), so winning would definitely be useful.
